I have seen a flurry of bad job-searching advice on LinkedIn recently. Here are some of the top ones I have seen and what to do instead.
Stop applying for jobs that are advertised. Everyone else is.
The people who are advertising jobs are the ones who are hiring. Very few people are sitting on open positions without posting them. Yes, competition may be high for these roles. Instead, focus on how to make your application more attractive to hiring managers.
Remove your ‘open to work’ label. It’s like the ‘I need a friend!’ bench.
The open-to-work label is one of your primary tools for signaling to your network that you are looking for a new position. Not leveraging this means limiting your ability to amplify your reach.
Multiply the volume of work you are currently doing to find a job by 10.
Potential jobs open and close daily over time. You are only a strong candidate for a particular number of positions at any given time. Any extra effort beyond that is wasted. Instead of focusing on the volume of applications, focus on learning and filling gaps to make you a better candidate.
